Like most people – I’m addicted to Netflix.
So I thought I’d share something a little different. It’s a list of my favourite films and documentaries about the financial markets.
If you have time this weekend, I highly recommend you check them out.
The Big Short (2015)
A superb film (based upon the excellent book) which details how institutional corruption led to the collapse of the US housing market. This subsequently caused the global financial crisis of 2008. Christian Bale plays an investment fund manager who recognises that the US housing market is about to collapse, and therefore bets against it.
The China Hustle (2017)
A brilliant Netflix documentary which reveals US investment firms are using Chinese companies to commit securities fraud.
Margin Call (2011)
This is another film about the 2008 financial crisis. It focuses on a large US investment bank and the actions of their employees as the implications of the impending crisis become clear. Jeremy Irons is fantastic in this film – he plays John Tuld, the CEO of the investment bank.
Wall Street (1987)
This classic eighties film by Oliver Stone sheds light on the darker practices that can be found on Wall Street, such as insider trading.
